I've recently been reflecting on this question while giving away my OnePlus Nord smartphone – an act that surprised even me with the emotions it surfaced. This reflection led me to uncover a pattern in my professional journey that I hadn't fully appreciated until now.

Books had captured my imagination, but in my country, building a physical library comes with a prohibitive price tag that most students simply can't afford. The promise of a single device offering thousands of books represented something beyond technology – it was potential knowledge unlocked.

To make this happen, I began giving tutoring sessions after classes. My transportation? What we jokingly called "Car #11" – my own two legs. Thirty minutes walking there, thirty minutes back, sometimes under the scorching sun, other times through unexpected rain.

Every tutoring session represented another small step toward that Kindle. Every saved taka felt like a tiny victory in my personal financial journey.

Fast forward several years. I had followed OnePlus since their 2014 beginnings as the "flagship killer." In my country, their phones were priced beyond "flagship killer" status, making them objects of admiration, not ownership.

By this point in my journey, I had come to terms with certain realities about my future. Being among "the top from the back" of my class (that polite phrase for mediocrity), I had set modest professional ambitions. While classmates aimed for prestigious banking careers, I charted a humbler path.

Then came INCEIF in Malaysia in 2019 – a turning point with absolutely no safety net.

Survival meant working as a research assistant at two institutions simultaneously. It meant late nights grinding through assignments to preserve my scholarship. Sometimes, it meant calculating whether I could stretch one meal across an entire day to save enough for loan repayments.

When my studies ended, I faced another hurdle: no longer eligible for my research positions. I took on side research projects before eventually landing a startup internship.

By this time, my university friends back home were celebrating promotions or excellent positions. Meanwhile, I was still finding my footing—a feeling many of us know all too well.

The internship eventually became a full-time role. I began writing extensively in Islamic finance groups. Then reality hit: my trusty 2011 laptop gasped for digital breath, and my phone screen resembled a spider's web of cracks.

When family and relatives said "no" to loaning money, I checked my savings and found—surprisingly—enough for both a gaming laptop and the newly-released OnePlus Nord.

After days of internal dialogue, I made the purchase during COVID-19. By the time my Malaysian visa expired, I returned home to two job offers—the fruit of consistent learning and knowledge-sharing.

Both stories share a common thread of intentional persistence – continuing forward despite uncertainty, making choices aligned with deeper values rather than immediate gratification, and trusting that consistent effort will eventually yield results.

This kind of persistence differs from mere stubbornness because it's guided by clear intention and remains flexible in approach while firm in purpose.

What I've come to appreciate most through these reflections is how certain possessions become unexpected waypoints in our journey – not because of what they are, but because of what they signify about our growth and transitions.

When people say "how lucky you are," it sometimes triggers that slight irritation we all feel when complex journeys are reduced to simple luck. What appears as luck from the outside is actually calculated risk—being prepared to restart as a fresher while peers advanced—coupled with dedication to learning and sharing.

This journey has taught me that with sincere intention and consistent effort, doors open from places we never expect. After all, Allah is the best planner, orchestrating opportunities through channels we could never anticipate.
