Happy Happy Hormones

'Only when you find love, do you discover what you lack in life'

One of my friend posted this after getting engaged to his other half. Resonated deep when at that time my world echoed bleak, my future seemed faint and my life purposes were aimless, following a painful breakup. When I have lost love that once fill up a space and all I was left after, was a huge emptiness. I felt like I was lacking in life again.

Then I came across an article on happy hormones and of their specific functions in uplifting our spirits. I was in awe, flabbergasted at the astonishing marvels of a human body. For the fact I was suffocating and gasping for glimpse of happiness, this remarkable piece of information seemed to hit home.

These happy hormones include:

πŸ”·
Dopamine- Also known as the 'feel-good' hormone, Dopamine is a hormone and neurotransmitter that's an important part of your reward system, associated with pleasurable sensations, along with learning, memory, motor system function and more.
πŸ”·
Serotonin - This hormone and neurotransmitter helps regulate your mood as your sleep, appetite, digestion, learning ability and memory.
πŸ”·
Oxytocin - Often called the 'love hormone', oxytocin is essential for childbirth, breastfeeding, strong parent-child bonding. This hormone can also help promote trust, empathy and bonding in relationships. Oxytocin levels generally increase with physical affection like kissing, cuddling and love making
πŸ”·
Endorphins - your body's natural pain reliever, which your body produces in response to stress or discomfort. Endorphins levels also tends to increase when you engage reward-producing activities such as working out.

And I thought to myself, W-O-W !! Gives fresh perspectives to the clichΓ© expression 'Humans are the best of creations'. Allah Created us to perfection and He equipped us with the right ingredients to concoct a happy and healthy balanced life. Do things that pleases you, reward yourself, enrich yourself, take care of your well being, love one another, help others - all within the boundaries of our religion. And He Assures us (scientifically at that) - we will be happy.

And the extent we can be happy? Our mind is the limit.

We are the generators of the happy hormones, whether we propel it towards goodness or destruction, the choice is entirely up to us.

These happy hormones are just one of gazillion blessings we almost never stop and ponder upon. If we were to list out and count our blessings, it would be an impossible feat. Our blessings are infinite. Nouman Ali Khan here splendidly elaborates the point I am trying to make, taking example from an ayah of the Quran - demonstrating yet once again how the language of the Quran is laser sharp and precise.

Pain and losses are lessons in life exist to make us appreciate these blessings that we often don't even realize it's there until it slips away from your hands. Having experienced the blessings and then to loose it, manifests just how far extent life has to offer and that we are and we alone are responsible in flourishing the happiness.

Today my heart has healed, with His Grace. I found love. I found the greatest love of all - His Love. I am happy again. Life is meaningful again. And I am humbled more than ever by what ever happiness that floats my way, small or big - a blessing many a time I took for granted in the past.

As they say, key to happiness is gratitude.
Inshaa Allah.
