In the vast ocean of information that is our world, it’s easy to feel like you’re drowning.
Advice comes at you from all directions, often contradictory, and it can be overwhelming.
It’s like being on a rollercoaster that only goes up, with no end in sight.
But what if I told you there’s another way?
We often find ourselves learning out of necessity rather than interest, just to stay competitive.
We’re so focused on the outcome that we forget about the joy of learning.
But what about the things that spark our curiosity?
The things we want to learn for the sheer joy of it, without any thought of the outcome?
This kind of learning can be a game-changer. Because knowledge is never wasted. And who knows what the future holds?
Let me take you on a journey through my own learning experience.
Learning for Pleasure: A Game-Changer for Your Future
Once upon a time, I was (and still am) fascinated by how software and computers work. It seemed like magic to me, and I wanted to understand it.
So I dove headfirst into the world of programming.
My first language? C. If you’ve ever programmed in C, you know the agony of a missing semicolon ruining your entire day’s work.
So I stopped at the basics.
Then I discovered CS50, a course by David Malan from Harvard.
It taught me more than just programming - it taught me how to think.
Next, I moved on to Python. Again, I only learned the basics.
Life happens, right?
But here’s the thing: even though I jumped around from one thing to another, it wasn’t for nothing.
I once landed a mini-job teaching basic Python when I needed money the most. And now, I can read Python codes and understand what’s going on.
Once, I found a script that automated job applications on LinkedIn. I modified it to fit my needs and applied for over 200 jobs in one night. Out of those applications, I got shortlisted for 5 interviews.
So can you say learning for pleasure is worth nothing?
Absolutely not! It can be a game-changer.
It connects your past, present, and future in ways you might not see yet. But trust me - you’re laying down the dots just right.
Learning for pleasure is simply learning new things because you enjoy it, not because you need to for work or school. It can be anything from reading books to watching educational videos to taking online courses.
Many people dismiss learning for pleasure as a waste of time. But the truth is, it can be a game-changer for your future. Here are a few reasons why:
1. Learning for pleasure helps you to develop new skills and knowledge.
When you learn for pleasure, you're not bound by the constraints of a curriculum or syllabus. You can choose to learn about anything that interests you. This gives you the opportunity to develop a wide range of skills and knowledge that can be valuable in your career and personal life.
For example, if you're interested in learning a new language, you can take an online course, watch foreign films, or read books in the language you want to learn. This can help you to develop new skills, such as communication and problem-solving. It can also give you a better understanding of different cultures.
Or, if you're interested in learning about a new technology, you can read articles, watch tutorials, or experiment with the technology yourself. This can help you to develop new skills that can be valuable in your career.
2. Learning for pleasure helps you to stay curious and engaged.
Curiosity is one of the most important qualities of a successful person. When you're curious, you're always looking for new ways to learn and grow. Learning for pleasure helps you to stay curious and engaged with the world around you.
When you're curious, you're more likely to ask questions, seek out new information, and experiment with new ideas. This can lead to innovation and breakthroughs.
Learning for pleasure can also help you to stay engaged in your work and personal life. When you're learning new things, you're more likely to be challenged and motivated. This can lead to increased productivity and satisfaction.
3. Learning for pleasure helps you to network with other people.
When you're learning about something you're passionate about, you're more likely to meet other people who share your interests. This can lead to new friendships, collaborations, and opportunities.
For example, if you're interested in learning about coding, you can join a coding club or online community. This can help you to meet other people who are interested in coding, learn from each other, and collaborate on projects.
Or, if you're interested in learning about a new hobby, such as photography or cooking, you can take a class or join a club. This can also help you to meet other people who share your interests and learn from each other.
4. Learning for pleasure helps you to live a happier and more fulfilling life.
Learning new things is enriching and rewarding. It can help you to expand your horizons, challenge your perspectives, and grow as a person.
When you learn new things, you become more well-rounded and interesting. You also become more adaptable and resilient. This can help you to cope with challenges and stress more effectively.
Learning for pleasure can also lead to new opportunities. For example, if you learn a new language, you may be able to travel more easily or get a job in a different country. Or, if you learn a new skill, you may be able to start your own business or get a promotion at work.
